Helping your Child to Become a
Problem Solver
When you think about the future and your child as an adult, you want to know that your child has the ability to solve many of the problems that are bound to occur later their live. That’s why it’s important to provide young children with the opportunities to confront and solve challengson their own. This process supports them in developing the tools they needto be creative problem solvers now,and when they areall fully grown.
Tutor Time’s Top Five
1.Give your child time to figure out the answer to a problem-Instead of rushing in when your baby can’t quite reach a toy,or your preschooler can’t get her arm through a sleeve:wait, watch, and provide encouragement.
2 .Flip back questions-When your child asks”Why...?”or”How...?” respond by asking back “What do you think?”
3.Play critical thinking games-“What would you do if you were as big as an ant?” provides a great opportunity for your child to explore problem-solving skills.
4.Talk through problems together-Point out problems and discuss possible solutions together.Give your child an active role in the problem solving process.
5.Express confidence-When your child faces a problem let him know that you believe he can solve it.When your child does, help him reflect on the steps he took to reach a solution.
